3/139 Lea Farm Cottage
House. c.1600, altered in early C19. Timber-framed and red brick. Steeply
pitched plain-tiled roof formerly thatched. Ridge stack of 3 flues of coursed
sandstone with red brick above the ridge. Plan of main range with crosswing at
north-east end. One storey and attic. Two C19 gable dormers. Iron frame C19
casements and 2 boarded doors at ground floor all under segmental arches.
Cross-wing has 2 similar windows to each gable end. The framing is exposed in
the north east side wall. Small framing of height of 3 panels to each wall.
Interior: 2 structural bays. Framing visible in rear wall and in centre truss.
Tie-beam roof with inclined short queen-struts from collar to principal rafters.
Jowled main posts, arch and wind bracing. Principals halved at the apex with
ridge piece on edge. Back-to-back inglenook hearths of sandstone with some brick
alterations and blocking. The main beam at ground floor in the main range is
stop-chamfered. The crosswing is of 2 bays. Similar timber-framing indicating
that both ranges are contemporary. Wind-braced roof. The centre truss has a
raised tie beam. The crosswing was probably a parlour. There is a stop-chamfered
main beam. Old boarding in the floors.
