Listing Text

SP2390 (South side)
13/174 Nos. 2 and 3, Rose Cottages.
- II
Pair of cottages. Late C17, altered C19 and late C20. Timber-framed with brick
infill, and sandstone to C19 parts, rendered on the front. Plain-tiled gable
roofs. 2 cottages forming part of a row. End stacks are now internal following
the C19 extensions of the row. Each cottage originally had a plan of one room at
ground and one at first floor. One storey and attic. Three C19/C20 gable
dormers. Late C20 bow window to No. 3. Segmental arch to 3-light casement to No.2
and adjacent doorways each with narrow hood on shaped brackets. No.2 has a C19
door of 4 sunk panels. No.2 has C19 kitchen extension at the back of sandstone
rubble. Interior: No.2 has stop-chamfered main beams and joists and framed rear
wall. Tie beams exposed at first floor. Front wall framing probably removed when
kitchen addition made. Small hearths also probably of C19. The cottage plans may
reflect a C19 subdivision of a single dwelling, particularly since the timber
scantlings and mouldings are of C17.
