Gatehouse and attached walls and coach house. 1848-49 by Henry Clutton for
William Stratford Dugdale of Merevale Hall. Sandstone ashlar. Plain-tile roof
has moulded coped gable parapets with moulded gablet kneelers; stone internal
stacks. Gothic Revival style, with trefoiled lancets throughout. T-plan. One
storey and attic; 3 wide bays. Wide gabled central range has buttresses flush
with front. Large arch of continuous outer moulded and inner broad-chamfered
orders, with hood mould and head stops. 2 lancets above arch. Between and above
them is a large pointed quatrefoil with a shield of arms. Gable has large finial
of a seated knight holding a shield. Vaulted interior of arch has inner wall.
Simply moulded segmental pointed pedestrian and carriage arches have studded
plank doors with elaborate strap hinges. Octagonal stair turret in re-entrant
angle to left has splay string course, slit windows and stone roof with
weatherings and finial. Right bay is blank. Internal stack to right has
octagonal stacks with moulded cornices. Left return side has paired lancets to
ground floor, and 3 above. Right return side has 2 lancets, and attic window of
3 trefoils under a relieving arch. Front towards the church is largely similar,
but centre does not project. Buttresses flanking arch and to angles. Carved
beasts below gable. Archway has moulded quadripartite vault with moulded
corbels. Chamfered trefoiled arched studded doors to left and right. Attached
walls are mostly of ashlar with stone coping. Roadside walls step down hill to
left, with left half of coarser stonework, and up to right. On the south-east
side the wall on the left ends in a small coach house with coped gable parapet
and plain-tile roof, and double doors. The wall at right angles on the right
steps down in stages between the gatehouse and the west front of the church.
Chamfered doorway to the churchyard has shouldered head and studded door.
