Farmhouse and attached walls. Late C16/early C17 with C18 and C19 rebuilding and
additions, and late C20 alterations, Flemish bond brick; colourwashed rendered
darn front, possibly over some timber-framing, with Flemish bond brick additions
and rear. Plain-tile roof: Cl9 brick ridge and internal stacks, and rendered
valley stack. Irregular U-plan with wings to rear. 2 storeys 6-window range.
Garden front has irregular plinth and 3 qabies of varying sizes. Left gable has
lower, narrower 2-storey gabled bay with French window and single ligiits to
canted sides. 3-light casement with glazing bars above. Irregular fenestration,
mainly of C20 casements. Large late C20 ground floor window. Two 3-light C20
casements with horizontal glazing bars above. Wide central gable. French window
on right; 5-light casement above. Left range of brick is set back; fixed-light
windows. C19 brick range on right has 2-light window with brick segmental arch,
and C20 three-light casement above, Return sides and rear are irregular, Right
return side has C18 two-panelled door in wing. Interior has fine early C17 open
well staircase with pierced scrolled strapwork balustrade, strings carved with
foliage and grotesques, and newel posts with panelled tops and carved animal
finial. Ceiling above has a panel with carved wood frame, painted with the arts
of Grosvenor of Sutton Coldfield. Central room of Rain range to garden has
exposed close-studded partitions, chamfered beam and fireplace with chamfered
cambered bressumer. Kitchen has chamfered beam and large former open fireplace.
Walls attached to left of garden front are probably C17/C18. Sandstone rubble
with pitched coping. Wall to left is approximately 10 metres long. Another wall
attached at right angles to it is approximately 15 metres long. Each wall has a
gateway with brick jambs and segmental arch and plank door
(VCH: Warwickshire: Vol lV, p101).
