2/84 Garden wall, gatepiers and
pavilion approx. 50m NW of
Middleton Hall
Wall, gatepiers and pavilion. C18. Red brick with sandstone piers and coping.
The wall encloses 3 sides of a garden and the south-west side of a stable yard
which lies immediately to the south-east. The pavilion is in the north-east
corner of the garden. It is square and formerly of 2 storeys with a pyramidal
plain tile roof and brick corner stack. On each of the 2 external faces there is
a blind round-headed recess. The doorway is in the south-east face towards the
garden: it has a segmental head and there is a segmental-headed window to its
left hand side. All the windows are late C20 within C18 openings. There are 2
gateways on the south-west side, one giving access to the garden and the other
to the stable yard. The stonework of both is heavily weathered; the latter is
blocked but retains a round arch with hood would and a pair of rusticated
gatepiers with boldly projecting caps; the former retains a pair of piers.
