Remains of Roman Villa. C3, rediscovered in 1879. Masonry
walls survive up to about 4ft in height and the hypocaust
system and many elaborate tesselated pavements survive. These
include in Room I a mosaic of Orpheus with animals and birds,
in Room 2 a unique mosaic pavement including the
chicken-headed Gnostic god Abraxes, a central roundel of
Bacchus God of Wine and gladiators in combat, in Room 11 a
simple diamond-shaped pattern within a border of red and white
tesserae and in Room 12 a very elaborate mosaic divided into
panels by a braided guilloche. This room contains one of the
most important floor mosaics in Britain. subject matter
includes Perseus rescuing Andromeda, busts of the 4 Seasons,
the head of Medusa, Ceres distributing ears of corn to
Triptolemus, a satyr pursuing a Bacchante, Lycurgus attacking
the Maenad Ambrosia with a double axe, and a maenad playing a
tambourine dancing with a shepherd boy. Rectangular border
panel with merman, sea centaurs and nereids. Scheduled Ancient
Monument.
