Description

NEWCHURCH
SZ58NE KNIGHTON SHUTE
1352-0/1/154 Wall surrounding former Bowling
27/07/88 Green to Knighton Gorges
GV II

Wall enclosing former bowling green. Probably C18. Roughly
rectangular wall which formerly enclosed a bowling green to
the mansion of Knighton Gorges, a C16. building which was
demolished in 1821. Stone rubble walls to west, north and east
rising to 6-8ft with some C18 brick quoins to north-east
corner. South section is of red brick and has an attached late
C18 or early C19 garden building with vaulted ceiling and
mullioned window in east side and door to west. This provided
a heated garden wall. Included for historical interest as a
garden building to a significant, though now demolished,
Island manor house.
