Former summerhouse, now table tennis room and garden wall.
Former summerhouse possibly C17 altered late C18, mid C19 and
C20. Stone with brick gables and plain tiled roof. Rectangular
building of 1 storey. Front elevation has 6-fielded panelled
door in moulded wooden architrave with wide wooden weather
hood on carved brackets above. Approached up a flight of 6
stone steps with handrail missing at time of survey and the
last step curved. Other faces have 1 early C19 type sash
window each having cambered head lining with Keystone and
12-pane sashes with slender glazing bars. Right side mid C19
red brick chimneystack.
Interior has mid C19 wooden fireplace with pilasters. Attached
is a section of early C19 brick diaper patterned garden wall
about 9ft high with stone coping, the rear cement rendered.
Inscription attached to summerhouse 'In this summerhouse in
May 1819 Captain H Kater FRS determined the length of the
pendulum, vibrating seconds at sea level, to be 39.13614
inches'. Said to have been the meeting place of Jacobite
supporters in the mid C18 as the local landowner Was a
Jacobite.
