Late C18. 2 storey and attic. Formerly 2 houses designed as a symmetrical block.
Vitreous brick with red window surrounds and dressings, on bath stone plinth.
Painted string over ground and 1st floor windows, has been moulded on upper level,
part now cut away. Painted stone coping to parapet continuing across and up
sides on pediments at each side of front on slight projections. Mansard old
tile roof. 2 central dormers and 2 small semi-circular lights in tympana of
pediments. Palladian window with moulded Doric stucco (probably stone under)
surround, in centre of each end wing under pediment, glazing altered. 3 central
1st floor windows, moulded frames and keystones. On ground floor - 1 window
in left hand wing, 4 panes wide, central 3-light window, with heavy barred diamond
pattern fixed side lights and C19 3-light window in right hand gable. 2 6-panel
doors, flanking central window, each with radiating and wreathed fanlight and
under porches with slender Doric columns and modified entablature with a double
deck frieze and cornice. The right hand porch enriched with fluting to lower
part of frieze, and row of balls under cornice. The upper part of frieze with
angle fluting and roundel ornament in each case. The right hand door has fluted
architrave surround with angle blocks. This house is very effectively placed
at right angles to street.
Nos 1, 2, 4 to 11 (consec) form a group with Nos 40 to 48A (consec), opposite,
and Nos 1, 17 and 18 Silvester Street.
