of tower of Church of St Nicholas

Celtic cross, 1906, Ballinasloe limestone. To the poet Thomas
Moore (1779-1852). 5.5m high ornamented cross on large battered
base inscribed in Gaelic lettering 'Thomas Moore Born 28 May 1779
Died 25 February 1852', and below,
'Dear harp of my country, in darkness I found thee
The cold chain of silence had hung o'er thee long
When proudly, my own island harp, I unbound thee
And gave all thy chords to light, freedom and song'.
On the rear is inscribed:
'The poet of all circles, and the idol
of his own' Byron.
