4/60 Saint Edith's House
II
Small country house, c1860-70, ashlar with slate roofs and ashlar
stacks. 2 storeys and attic, heavily-detailed Jacobean style with
shaped gables and large cross windows. 3-window E front, the sides
advanced and gabled with 2-storey canted bays, rusticated quoins
and 2-light attic windows. To the centre, pierced parapet with
arched-headed stepped centre panel, first floor window of 2 arched
lights in rectangular frame and ground floor double doors with
sidelights and large segmental arched overlight set in projectng
ashlar Jacobean style porch. Porch is heavily ornate with 2 pairs
of Renaissance Doric columns interrupted at mid-length by diamond
facetted blocks. Single pilaster responds, entablature with
diamond facetting and large carved coat-of-arms over, showing a
chevron and 3 turtles. Side wall stacks to each wing. South side
has pierced parapet, 2 differing gabled dormers, 3 first floor
cross windows and ground floor arcaded and pilastered conservatory
with Jacobean detail and pierced parapet. Glazed roof missing.
North front has projecting shaped gable to right and ground floor
stone canted bay with moulded arched lights to sides, carved
capitals and Florentine-traceried centre window now a door with
centre shaft removed. The rear service wing is now a separate
property, and not included in the listing.
House is said to have been built for a member of the Gaby family of
Westbrook and Netherstreet who died before the house was completed.
