Farmhouse. Late C16-early C17. Part flint and sarsen boulders,
part timber framing with wattle and daub, much replaced with brick
noggings. Single storey and attic. Original structure parallel to
road containing central living hall, inner room and kitchen behind
major chalkstone stack, the kitchen having a separate, perhaps
later, fireplace with oven, now blocked. Forward wing on left end
probably an addition, providing a cross passage at rear of the
lateral stack of kitchen and covering the probable position of
first lobby entry. The wing contains 2 bays of accommodation,
unheated, possibly a dairy and cheeseloft. The kitchen bay of
original structure is of stone, the rest timber framed, and the re-
entrant facade of the wing also framed. Framing 3 panels high with
corner and tension braces. Boarded door to cross passage. Timber
casement windows, but altered stone mullioned windows with labels
on gable of wing to road. Roof half hipped.
Interior: Living hall, inner room and kitchen all have deep
chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. Fireplace has stopped
chamfered mantel beam with chalkstone jambs. Main chamber over has
moulded stone arched fireplace. Many C17 and C18 doors. Wing has
original door and frame from cross passage. A house where the
chronological relationship between stone and timber construction is
obscure.
