SU 17 SE OGBOURNE ST GEORGE SOUTHEND
7/108 Barn at Hallam Farm buildings
I
Barn. C14-C15. Timber framed and weatherboarded on brick sill
walls, the weatherboarding replacing wattle and daub. Thatched
roof. Six bays, with C20 lean-to at west end. Cart doors in third
bay from west, on north side, and narrow low door opposite, now
replaced. Four complete cruck couples, with arch braced collars
and stub ties carrying outer rafters partly trenched for the lower
of 2 purlins. Three couples have Type C apex saddles notched for
diagonally set ridge tree, the centre couple having a type F1 apex
with king post. Trusses scratch numbered from east. Purlins have
curved windbraces. The fifth truss is a standard tie-beam and
collar truss with jowled posts and curved braces to the tie, but is
coeval with the crucks. Truss 1 probably had a full tie-beam,
replaced with a later timber. Original rafters have the thatch
tied on. External walls of 2 panels high, studded in lower panel
and tension braces above and include one original door jamb. The
whole structure is practically complete, included the groundsills,
and thus is of outstanding merit.
