Accommodation bridge, and second world war defences. c1807 and c1940. By John Rennie
for Kennet and Avon Canal. Bridge of red brick with some purple vitrified bricks,
c1940. Bridge of red brick with some purple vitrified bricks,
splayed on plan and section. Limestone parapet. Bridge consists
of 41cm brick bullnosed ring, and 3-course outset string at base of
parapet. Half-round copings and caps to end piers. Cast-iron
lozenge sign by Great Western Railway on rail stanchion. Bridge
defended c1940 with 5 lines of iron stanchions (base only remains)
and round solid drums, and on north side, a pillbox of hollow
clayware pots with concrete roof and internal baffle wall. Five
gun ports. The canal works and the defences are a group of some
interest.
