12/28 Fyfield Manor
Large house. C15, C16, late C17, early-mid C18, and 1925. Brick
on high stone plinth, slate roof. Two storeys with cellars. Main
front to south comprising 7 bays symmetrical about central
entrance, and forward wings of 1 bay to left, and 2 bays to right.
Left wing continued as wing to rear, C16. Right wing contains C16
work remodelled and extended to rear in C18. The 2 rear wings
linked by a 1925 flat roofed structure. C15 structure of stone,
partly included in stair tower at rear with 4-centred 2-light
windows. Central entrance to main front with early C18 doorcase
with pulvinated frieze and pediment on consoles. Twelve-paned
sashes with gauged lintels, plat band and moulded brick cornice.
This is interrupted by 3 asymmetrical gables of mid C17 with carved
barge boards. Fenestration to left wing similar but stone lintel.
Large iron letter M. Right wing has two C17 brick external'stacks.'
This front has C18 wood dentilled cornice and end gable stack.
West rear wing extended in C19 as 2 parellel ridged single storey
outbuildings, now childrens room. Diagonal brick shafts to all
Interior: Entrance hall, late C16-early Cl7, panelled, with stone
square flags. Main reception room to right was probably hall of
the Cl6 house. Cornice and ovolo moulded ceiling beams, and C16-
C17 panelling. Sitting room to right wing fully panelled with
bolection mouldings and cornice, and a marble fireplace, all C17.
Similar fireplace and panelling to room to rear. A homely manor
house in the picturesque tradition, the retirement home of Lord
Avon, former prime minister, from c1958 to 1965.
