Farmhouse, C16-C17, C18 with later alterations. Ground floor of
brick, upper floor timber framed, clad with tile hanging. Tiled
roof. Two storeys, cellars and attics. South front original
formal entrance, of 7 bays, with 3 storey central projecting porch,
open and panelled on ground floor, covering pair of panelled and
glazed doors. Four-pane sash windows of C19. Large gables
either side of porch. West end developed as cross wing with
central stack and room on projecting part to rear north side.
Timber framing partly exposed on north side, and having brick
noggings. Triple roof extension at east end with early C19 bay to
south. Long service wing on north side.
Interior: central 3 bay hall with C17 panelling and added stack.
Early-mid C18 stair with bolection moulded dado in stair tower
opposite porch. Drawing room west of hall has bolection moulded
panelling and C20 fireplace. Dining room to east also C18
panelling with chair rail and cornice. South-west room on first
floor has full-height C17 panelling with pilastered and gadrooned
overmantel with arms of Seymour. Complete C17 panelling in small
upper parlour in east extension, also having panelled doors and
window shutters. Other first floor rooms also panelled. Tenoned
purlin roof. Some original C18 and early C19-iron casements and
original glass. C17 stair with turned balusters in east
extension. Cellars partly filled.
The house was the home of Sir Edward Ernle, and stood in parkland
in the later C18 with railed forecourt, landscaped canal and
formal gardens on the east.
