5/33 No 42, (Hillview)
with front railings
House. Dated 1757, Flemish bond brickwork, English garden wall
bond to return, with flush stone quoins and dressings. Pantiled
roof between raised gables. Two storeys, 3 bays, with central
stair hall and flanking reception rooms. Six panelled door with
bead moulded stone surround, and stone canopy on shaped brackets.
Mid wall moulded string and stone moulded offset to plinth.
Sixteen-paned sashes to ground floor, also with wide bead moulded
architraves. Central simplified Venetian window to first floor
with stone springers and keystone, and 8-paned outer sash windows,
also with stone surrounds. Gable stacks with moulded stone caps.
Central fielded datestone reading E / H Potter / 1757. C20
extension to right, now a separate dwelling not of special
interest. Mid C19 fireplace and surround to left living room, and
two ceiling beams. The Potter family were manufacturers of sheep
bells into the C19. Front garden has railings of early C19,
spearheaded, on flint wall. Symmetrical gate inset, with
decorative stanchions.
Interior has stair in rear range, with cellar under left bay.
