II
House formerly with shop. 1843. Flemish brickwork with slate
roof. Two storeys, 3 bays, extended both ends a lower two-storey
bay. Central stair hall and flanking reception rooms. Six
panelled door with plain arched fanlight and slate slab on wrought
iron brackets. Sixteen-paned sashes with painted finely gauged
brick lintels, but shop window to right bay, 3 arched lights
between timber pilasters and cornice. Lower bay on left has 9-pane
sash to upper floor and hipped roof, right end bay similar,
probably added later, with false painted sashes. Gable stacks,
that to right with datestone reading M.S.S. 1843. Lean-to
extension to rear. House was built for Mark Sawyer, eminent non-
conformist and millwright. His smithy remains to the rear, not
included.
