Farmhouse. c1600, c1680, early and mid C18. Colourwashed stone
with extensions in brick. Plain and pantiled roofs. Two storeys,
attic and cellar. Main range of 3 bays, single storey and attic,
raised to 2 storeys, with stone built half bay at north containing
large fireplace, cross wing added later C17 at south, 2 bays, stone
with close studded framed upper floor, a second cross wing added
behind, on east side in late C17-early C18, and a third cross wing
added on west side of north end in first half of C18. Original
structure has central entrance in C19 lean-to porch and timber
windows. South cross wing has 12-paned sashes, closely spaced, and
24-paned sashes on east gable. Studding has central rail and wavy
corner braces. East cross wing has C18 paned sashes and a blocked
bolection moulded doorway to gable, and a lean-to service room on
north side. The C18 north cross wing has plat band and stone
framed and mullioned windows, the fenestration altered. Major
stack at north end of main range, with lateral stack to C17 wing
and various later chimneys.
Interior: Main range has deeply chamfered cross and spine beams
with elaborate chamfer stops. Fireplace altered, but originally
had two large ovens or smoke chambers. At south end, a fine C17
oak dog leg stair with barley-sugar balusters and heavy handrail,
probably inserted when first cross wing built. Hall containing
stair has early C18 painted panelling, and this extends into cross
wing parlours, since subdivided. Drawing room in west bay of this
wing has C18 chimneypiece with marble slips. North cross wing said
to have good roof, not seen, and former dovecote on upper floor.
