2/50 Bruce Tunnel, East Portal

Portal to Bruce Tunnel on Kennet and Avon Canal. 1810. Red brick
in English bond with stone coping. Concave on plan, with pointed
parabolic arch of 45cm brick. Large slate slab set over entrance
on paired slate corbels, inscribed: The KENNET AND AVON Canal
Company / Inscribe this TUNNEL with the name of / B R U C E / In
Testimony of their GRATITUDE / for the uniform and ....... support
of / The Right Honourable THOMAS BRUCE EARL OF AILESBURY / and
CHARLES, LORD BRUCE, his son / through the whole progress of this
great National Work / by which direct communication by Water was
opened / between the Cities of LONDON and BRISTOL / ANNO DOMINI
1810. Slate inscription in need of repair and consolidation at
time of survey, January 1987.
