Description

ST 86 SW BRADFORD-ON-AVON BATH ROAD

6/10000 Barn at Maplecroft Farm

GV II

Barn. Late medieval. Coursed limestone rubble; gabled corrugated iron
roof with plain finial to stone-coped N gable. 6-bay plan with central
threshing floor. Long gabled porch to W. Large doorway to E flanked
by shaped buttresses with larger buttress to N. Interior noted as
having 3 raised cruck trusses with chamfered arch braces and
principals and mortices for arch braces; two C18 collar trusses to S.
The raised cruck trusses invite comparison with Shaftesbury Abbey's
tithe barn at Bradford-on-Avon. It is possible that the original walls
were timber-framed, being replaced by stone in the C16 (Report and
drawings by R & B Harvey, 1988).
