Exterior 1732 (VCH). Main block - 3 storeys with rusticated ashlar ground
floor and coursed rubble upper parts with rusticated ashlar quoins. Moulded
string over 1st floor windows. Wall moulded cornice over 2nd floor window.
Plain ashlar parapet with moulded coping. Old tile roof. 8 windows to upper
floors in plain stone surrounds with small brackets to cills. Glazing bar
sashes 1st floor, plate glass sashes 2nd floor. 6 windows on ground floor
and central 6-panel double door in deep recess and with narrow flanking side
lights. Struck keystones over ground floor windows. No glazing bars to these
windows. Central sign. Extension to right hand slightly, set back, of same
wall treatment and roof, hipped to right but no cornice or parapet. 3 windows
to upper part, 2sashes, glazing bars 1st floor, right hand windows larger,
but ground floor altered. Further to right hand No 43, large yard entry with
segmental arch approximately 14 ft high, and with rusticated surround, plain
projecting springers and keystone. Double gates with centre ramped down,
arrow head rails and dog-rails. Stucco upper part and old tile roof. 3 windows
on 2nd floor, and one double window to right hand of arch on 1st floor and
over modern shop front on ground floor. Glazing bar sashes 2nd floor, plate
glass sashes 1st floor. This building has a long street frontage of considerable
importance and variety in the Market Place. Considerable extensions to rear
in small coursed and dressed rubble with brick quoins. Linked to No 43 by
2 bay ashlar block with band over found floor, (formerly 2 cottages), 2 windows
per floor and 2 doors (one blocked . Much of the stables now demolished but
a large 2 storey ) hipped building (at rear of public bar) remains.
