Rectory, now elderly people's residence. C18, rebuilt c1840.
Flemish bond brick with ashlar dressings, fishscale tiled roof,
brick stacks. 'L'-plan, with services to sides and to rear. C17-
style. Two storey and attic, 2-window front. Central half-glazed
door recessed in ashlar porch with double studded doors, gabled
parapet and plaque with Thynne motto; 'J'ai bonne cause', either
side are 3-light mullioned and transomed casements. First floor
has two 2-light ovolo-mullioned casements, gabled attic dormers
with 1-light ovolo-moulded casements. Gable to left has external
stack with diaper decoration, group of three diagonally set stacks
with toothed cappings. Attached to right of front is single storey
service wing with chamfered mullioned casements and three attic
gables, coped verges. Left return has two large 2-storey bays with
4-light mullioned and transomed casements to ground floor, 2 and 3-
light mullioned casements to first and attic gable and gabled
dormer to right. Rear has large external stack, some C18 brickwork
visible, rear service wing with C20 casements and sashes with flat
arches. C20 wing and conservatory-style covered corridor with
arched lights. Right return of rear range is partly rubble stone
with casement with three arched lights and flush 12-pane sash;
probably C18.
Interior has large entrance hall with stairs; two turned
balusters per tread, ramped and wreathed handrail, doors with two
arched panels and panelled reveals. Ground floor rooms with Adam-
style fireplaces and segmental-arched openings and alcoves, ribbed
plaster ceilings. Provided by the Thynne family of Longleat House
(q.v. Horningsham CP); which was formerly within this parish.
