3/193 Barn at Manor House

Barn. Circa 1600. Rubble stone plinth with weatherboarded timber
frame, tiled roof with hip to right, ashlar porches. Fourteen-
bays, including west bay now part of house (q.v.). Three hipped
porches on south side with double planked doors, added outshut
under catslide roof between porches has planked stable doors.
North side has small planked doors and blocked cart entries.
Interior has collar and tie-beam trusses with raking struts to
principals and lower tier of through purlins, curved bracing from
jowled main posts to tie-beam, two tiers of through purlins. Some
timber bracing inserted early C20 to arrest the westward movement
of roof trusses. Fourteenth west bay separated from main barn by
square-panelled timber-framed partition with herringbone brick
nogging. A fine example of a large barn associated with an
important manor, formerly a moated site.
