Detached house. WW/1768 on stack datestone. English bond brick
with chamfered stone quoins, hipped stone slate roof with gable end
brick stacks. L-plan. Two-storey and attic, 3-window. Central
door with 6 fielded panels in stone architrave with flat stone
hood, up steps, tripartite sash with higher central light in beaded
architrave either side. First floor has central sash with pediment
on consoles and tripartite sash with higher central light, either
side. Moulded stone eaves cornice. Three C20 hipped dormers with
plastic-framed casements to attic. Left return has 4-light
chamfered mullioned casement lighting basement, 3-light steel
casement to left, first floor has 12-pane sash in beaded
architrave, stepped brick eaves cornice. Rear has 2-storey C19
addition to right with French windows and sashes lighting stairs,
lean-to kitchen extension to right with casements, main range has
two hipped dormers and wing to right has one dormer, all with
plastic-framed casements.
Interior has drawing room with eared marble fireplace surround,
dado with fielded panels and corner cupboard with fielded
panelling, shaped shelves and round arch with keystone, doors with
2 or 4 fielded panels in moulded architraves. C19 stairs with
closed string and turned balusters. Attic has 3-bay roof with
kneed principals. A first floor window has name Mary Whitaker and
date 1789 scratched on a pane. The house was probably built for
William Whitaker of the prosperous clothier family.
