Detached house. Mid C18, rebuilt c1820 for Nathaniel Barton.
Limestone ashlar C19 range, coursed rubble stone C18 front, Welsh
slate hipped roof, ashlar stacks with moulded cappings. Greek
Revival. Two-storey, 5-window early C19 front. Central 3-panelled
door within portico with reeded columns and frieze with lion masks,
two 15-pane sashes either side. Plat band to first floor; five 12-
pane sashes. Pilasters with Greek key motif and stele carried up
to cornice and frieze to parapet with shallow pediment. Right
return has 2-storey bow with 15-pane sashes to ground floor and 12-
pane sashes to first floor, two tripartite sashes to right, first
floor has three segmental-headed sashes, pilasters as front. Left
return is C18 front with central planked door and flat stone hood
on brackets, 3-light mullioned and transomed casement either side,
additional one to left, first and second floors have three 3-light
mullioned and transomed windows and cross windows over door. Two-
storey service range to left in similar style with leaded mullioned
casements, balustraded parapet. Picturesque C19 cottage attached to
left has door with 4-fielded panels and 2-light casements with
wooden hoodmoulds, double gabled front with bargeboards. Rear has
12-pane sashes, C20 flat roofed extensions.
Interior: C18 range has lower ceilings, 6-panelled doors, window
shutters with fielded panels. C19 range has open well stairs with
cast-iron balustrade and moulded wreathed handrail in same style as
that at Sturford Mead (q.v.) diagonally laid marble hall floor.
Ground floor has 6-panelled doors in moulded architraves, moulded
plaster ceiling cornices, the dining room has shallow barrel
vaulted ceiling with moulded plaster ribs ornamented with animals,
Adam-style fireplace. First floor has plaster ceiling cornices,
doors in reeded architraves. Very likely that the same architect
designed the rebuilding of this house and the building of Sturford
Mead.
