Conigre Unitarian Church
ST 8558 4/18

Founded 1697, rebuilt 1856-7. William Smith architect. Decorated Gothic style
stone built aisled 4 bay church with main gabled front to east. East front: central
break and sides have crocketted pinnacles. Angle buttresses with gablet set offs
to centre and corner buttresses of similar design to sides. Large round window
with decorated tracery containing a swagged and cusped wheel. Central pointed
doorway of 3 orders, the doors to centre and sides ledged with fine ironwork.
Crocketted gable above breaking through crenellated ground floor string course;
legend in raised Gothic letters. Oak leaves and acorns in spandrels of gable and
tablet with Psalm extracts and date 1856. A pair of lancets on each side of doorway.
Narrow flanking bays have curved triangular windows to 1st floor and single order
pointed doorways. Extremely fine decorated wheel window at east gable end (with
good painted glass). Quatrefoil tracery in clerestory.

Conigre Unitarian Church and the Annexe to the south with its railings, dwarf wall
and gatepiers form a group with No 19 Middle Rank
