Pair of attached houses. Early C19. Ashlar front and sides,
rendered rubblestone to rear, Welsh slate hipped roof with central
ashlar and brick stacks. 4 storeys, 4 windows. Entrance doors are
to left and right, up concrete steps to first floor of No 401, and
ground floor of No 402. C20 door in semi circular arched opening
with fanlight, in 2 storey porch with hipped roof to 401. No 402
with ground floor entrance has first floor balcony to 3 storey wing
to right, with fanlight over French windows; probably original
entrance. Basement has two 8-pane sashes and French windows.
Rusticated first floor has four 8-pane sashes in semi-elliptical
panels with castellated aprons. Plat band with key pattern to
second floor, four tall 8-pane sashes with wrought iron balconies.
Third floor has four smaller 8-pane sashes, windows of second and
third floor are separated by grooved pilasters carried up to
cornice, with panelled frieze below. Pediment above cornice and
blocking course either side. Left return, No 401 has blind windows
to second and third floors and semi-circular blind arches to
rusticated porch first floor. No 402 has 2 storey, 2-window wing
to right with rusticated first floor. Rear is rendered with 4
sashes and semi-circular headed stair windows to sides.
Interior not inspected. Part of a spa development in Melksham of
c1815.
