(east side)

4/113 Hayes Wood

GV II

Farmhouse. Probably C16 or earlier, altered C17 and C19. Rubble
stone, double Roman tiled roof with axial and gable end brick
stacks. L-plan; through passage to rear of stack. Two-storey, 2-
window. Central C18 four-panelled door with integral transom light
and flat stone hood on brackets, pair of C19 four-pane sashes to
right, C19 stone canted bay with casements with arched lights to
left, also to left are three buttresses, including one C19 diagonal
buttress and one earlier buttress with offsets. First floor has
two 2-light flush mullioned casements. Right return has blocked
doorway and single-light ground floor casement, first floor 4-light
ovolo-mullioned casement with king mullion and relieving arch, pair
of pointed lancets to attic. Rear wing has lean-to porch to right
and C20 casement to left, 2-light ovolo-mullioned first floor
casement, lean-to dairy attached to later part of rear wing. Rear
has gabled stair turret with 4-pane sashes, lean-to addition to
right. Left return has single-light ground floor casement and 2-
light chamfered mullioned casement to first floor.
Interior altered, but retains very deeply chamfered beams with
stepped stops, chamfered compartmental ceiling beams in room to
left of entrance, blocked open fireplaces, dog leg stairs, 6-
panelled doors in moulded architraves. Roof not inspected, but
said to have been renewed. The plan of this house suggests a late
Medieval date and the size and quality of the surviving features
indicate a house of some importance.
