3/341 Group of eight monuments south of
tower of Church of St Nicholas
Eight chest tombs, mid C18 to early C19, ashlar. From north:
a) C. Broad monument, mid C18,with two fielded plaques each side,
fielded centre and angle piers, moulded base and cornice.
Inscription to Cornelius Broad died 1757.
b) R. Broad monument, later C18, with two shield plaques each
side, fielded angle piers and fluted centre piers. Moulded
cornice. Inscription to Richard Broad of Bath, carpenter, died
c) Unidentified monument, mid C18, with two segment-headed plaques
each side, moulded base and cornice with heavy pulvinated
frieze broken forward over fluted centre and angle piers.
d) & e) in iron railed enclosure.
d) A. Blatchley monument, early C19, elongated octagon plan with
humped top and each side divided into six small plaques.
Inscription to Andrew Blatchley died 1825.
e) Wilkins monument, C19, heavy neo-Grec style with cross-gabled
capstone and corner antefixae. Inscription to Sarah Jane
Wilkins died 1870.
f) Unidentified monument about 3m south of b), mid to later C18
with two shield plaques, pulvinated frieze broken forward over
piers with fielded panels and rosettes. Inscription to
g) Dallimore monument, about 2m south west of b), c1800, tall
elongated hexagon plan with moulded base and cornice and humped
cap. Inscriptions to Thomas Dallimore died 1799 and John
Dallimore died 1813. Fine lettering.
h) M. Broad monument about 2m south of e), mid C18 with two shield
plaques, cornice with pulvinated frieze broken forward over
scrolled piers. Inscription to Mary Broad.
