The description should be amended to read:-
Dovecote. Probably late C13. Circular structure of coursed rubble
whose roof of stone slates had collapsed shortly before August 1986.
Open doorway to the south with wooden lintel and architrave. Interior:
nine tiers of nesting boxes intact to a height of 2 metres. The
Nonarum Inquisitions of 1341 mentions a dovecote attached to Crudwell
rectory, which belonged to Malmesbury Abbey. The dovecote was probably
built as a result of improvements to the estate carried out by William
of Colerne, who was appointed abbot in 1260 and was responsible for
rebuilding the church between 1260 and 1288.
