Lodge to Grittleton estate, 1835 by James Thomson for Joseph Neeld.
Squared rubble stone with stone slate roof, moulded coped gables
with ball finial to west and three diagonal shafts to east end
stack. Two storeys, picturesque style. Dripcourse and attached
circular piers with moulded caps to ground floor angles. West
gable end has ground floor unmoulded 4-light mullion window, first
floor ashlar canted oriel with three round arched lights and apex
roundel inscribed 'Foss Lodge 1835'. South front has one-window
range of 2-light mullion windows to left and unusual tall thin
octagonal tower with string-courses, top small arched openings on
cardinal faces, carved shield to west and corbelled parapet. North
front has large porch at right end with circular angle shafts,
roll-moulded arched openings each side and stepped parapet. Two-
light to left. Slightly lower 2-storey east end section with
moulded coped east gable and ball finial. C20 addition to north.
Lodge was gamekeeper's house with kennels behind. Tower is said to
have been observation tower.
