8/24 Group of five monuments in
churchyard to east of chancel
of Church of St Martin
GV II
Row of four chest tombs, to members of the Rogers family, and a
fifth to north east, C18 to early C19, ashlar. From south:
a) Rogers monument, later C18, with fluted baluster angles, large
oval south plaque in egg-and-dart border with cherub heads in
spandrels, and drapery drop each side. Moulded base and
cornice with pulvinated frieze broken forward at centre.
Plainer north side fielded plaque with fielded strips each
side. Eroded inscription to '..... of Broom and Elizabeth
Rogers'.
b) Unidentified, monument, later C18, near identical to a).
c Mary Hood monument, c1800, near identical to a) and b).
Inscription to Mary Hood, daughter of Broom Rogers, died 1800.
d) John Rogers monument, c1815, with reeded angle piers, trapeze-
shaped plaque each side, plinth, base, cornice and stepped
ridged cap. Inscription to John Rogers, died 1813.
e) Unidentified monument about 2m north east of d), early C18 with
two sunk panels to south, one rectangular panel to north and
moulded capstone. Half sunk.
