8/89 Marker stone opposite Monument Farm
(formerly listed as Inscribed Stone
on Wick Hill)
Marker stone, uncertain date, about 1.5m high, with affixed cast-
iron plate reading 'From this Wick-Hill /Begins the Praise/Of Maud
Heath's Gift/ To these Highways', and 'The translation into English
verse of the earlier Latin inscription on the stone was made by the
Rev. W.L. Bowles Vicar of Bremhill in 1827'. The starting point of
the footpath from Wick Hill to Chippenham maintained from the gift
of Maud Heath of Langley Burrell made 12 June 1474. The stone may
date from 1698, when the feoffees erected the column at Kellaways
Bridge and the corresponding marker stone at Chippenham Clift.
