Description

BIDDESTONE THE GREEN
ST 8673
(south side)
9/57 Hawthorne Cottage and
outbuildings

GV II

House, mid C18 extended in early C19. Rubble stone original and
ashlar extension. Stone tile and imitation stone tile roofs. Two
storeys and attic. End wall stacks and coped gables. Original
main front was to east, one upper 2-light flush mullion window with
dripstone, one ground floor 3-light with dripstone and flush stone
doorcase. Right side is masked by C19 extension, ashlar, with
lean-to roof and platband carried around to north front to road,
now principal front. A roughly symmetrical front has been created
with the original north end wall to right and the extension north
wall to left, this given a partly dummy wall to mask the different
roof pitch. Coped cable and pair of ashlar stacks with short
parapet between. Two 2-light mullion windows to attic and first
floor, those to right C18 with dripstones, attic left window is
dummy. Ground floor C18 chamfered doorcase with hood on brackets
flanked by C19 canted bays. Range of outbuildings to rear.
