BREL: Swindon Works
1/149 Transport Garage
(73, 74 shop and store)

Machinery stores, now garage. 1899. Steel frame clad with corrugated iron
sheeting. A building of 2 arched naves supported by steel stanchions similar in
type to a station train shed of an earlier period. Curved steel members rest on
steel beams to carry the roof, which has a light frame and curved ties. The
whole is clad in heavy gauge OLD Swindon pattern sheet with iron corrugations at
184mm centres, rolled at the Swindon works. 2 lines of glazed roof lights.
Internally, the space is divided in 2 by a later corrugated steel wall. There are large doors, also of corrugated sheeting at either end. A remarkably well pre-served and very early example of a steel framed all-metal building. One of an important group of Victorian industrial buildings at the GWR works.
