THE CLOSE
Lodge and gatepiers at north entrance to Cathedral School

1843. 1 storey and attic ashlar picturesque lodge formed of 2 gabled blocks,
one stepped out. Stone copings and kneelers to gables. One south gable with
projecting ledged chimney with small offsets. Steep pitch scalloped tile
roofs. Below gable end with chimney a small stone roofed rectangular bay
with a 2-light leaded casement. The adjoining gable end has a 2 light lattice
casement and above on wall, a stone crown possibly early fragment reset.
Entrance on west side by gate, pointed arched doorway. Stone gable over with
date tablet. Linking with gate pier at right angles to lodge a short screen
wall, with door and merlon canted over with probably reset medieval head.
Tall stone gate piers, stepped caps crowned by ball finials. Modern wood
gate.

All the listed buildings in the Close form an outstanding group.
