1470 origin. Restaured by George Herbert in 1630 when he was rector.
Central part C17 altered, a 3-storey gabled block of chequer flint and stone
with stone copingto gable and old tile roof. C18 central sash window on 2nd
floor under drip mould of older and probably 3-light stone mullioned window.
On 1st and ground floors - 2 2-light moulded stone mullioned casements,
only the right hand ground floor window in original state, remainder modern
restorations. C18/C19 extension to left hand of flint with stone dressings
and irregular windows and a central arched door. Late C19 wing, neo-jacobean
to right hand of brick lath stone dressings. Verse of George Herbert's
inscribed in stone over doorway of C19 section.
South garden front has 5 windows, excluding late C19 part to West. C18 and
C19 sashes, the centre window and one to right tripartite glazing bars intact.
Leaded C19 easements on ground floor. Canted C19 bay to centre with tiled
pent roof, dormers restaured, one original. The 2 bays next to late Cl9
extension earliest part. Some exposed chamfered ceiling beams. The staircase
Victorian with thin turned balusters, panelled newels filth finials.
George Herbert died here.
