Circa 1826. Simple Italianate design of 3 arches, possibly by Wyattville
and Sir Richard Westmacott. (Estimate for work signed 23.iii. 1826 by Thomas
Strong).
Built in ashlar against a high ashlar garden wall which continues the modillion
block cornice of the loggia. Impost moulding and architraves to arches.
Blocking course. Outer spandrels with carved panels. Panels below with tritons to
left and Europa to right (from de Caux's grotto, see also under Park School
House). Interior reached by 2 moulded steps, the lower one forming a moulded
plinth to the loggia. The interior has a moulded cornice and a round-headed
window to each side over open balustrade. Double doors to rear exit with
6 carved panels and flanking antique marble columns with smaller antique
Corinthian caps; 2 flanking inset marble reliefs - to left tritons, to right
the birth of Venus (again from de Caux's grotto). Side benches. Numerous
other marbles and reliefs. The loggia is flanked by ramped quadrant walls
and panelled returns, and approached by a series of moulded steps from Wyatt's
west terrace and the Italian Garden. The approach steps are interrupted
by 2 solid piers.
