Antique (C3 AD).
White Egyptian granite column from the Temple of Venus Genetrix in Rome
bought for the Arundel collection by Evelyn circa 1650 (bought subsequently
by 5th Earl). For long the centrepiece of the forecourt of Wilton House.
Moved to present position by Wyatt in early C19. Corinthian capital and
high white marble base fitted in C17. Topped by good late Renaissance bronze
statue of Venus (also bought by Evelyn). Overall height 32 ft. Set in gravel
square in vista from loggietta (qv).
