6/45 John Philips monument
c.10 m south of the tower
in the churchyard of the
Church of St Michael

GV II

Chest tomb. Dated 1843. Portland stone. A lofty chest to a flat top with
rounded and moulded edge above a friez; fluted corner pilasters, moulded base,
all set to a flush platform. North and south sides have oval slightly raised
panel with floral drops, east and west ends with raised panel to indented
corners. Panels formerly painted black, some remains but mostly gone from south
side. To John Philips and other members of his family, this is a monument still
in the late C18 tradition, with sharp, well-cut inscriptions.
