6/59 Entrance way to Dewes

Wall with doorway, at back of pavement. C18. Rough coursed and squared lime-
stone, ashlar dressings. About 2 m length of wall, returned to front of Dewes
House (qv), rises to stone coping at c.3 m height but swept down to left and
return; two moulded flat pyramidal cappings set to coping. Roughly central is
doorway with 2 stone steps up to courtyard entry, within plain pilasters to caps
and flat elliptical arch with projecting keystone. The item adjoins an entrance
to the Quaker Meeting House (qv), is in detail similar to that, but separately
constructed. The wall is important to the continuity of the street and returns
to enclose the frontage of Dewes House.
