Ornamental Indian pavilion. Rebuilt on present site c1880.
Timber-framed with lathe and plaster panels, asphalt hipped roof.
Single-storey, raised above ground level, 3 finely carved window
surrounds, smaller casements flanking larger with elaborately
carved wooden canopies. Deep eaves to roof on heavily carved
brackets. Rear has planked door up steps, returns are windowless.
Interior not accessible at time of survey (April 1985), but walls
lined with carved wooden panels. Known as the General's Room, one
of a group of Indian buildings acquired by General Pitt-Rivers and
erected in his pleasure grounds to illustrate an unfamiliar culture
to the public who were encouraged to visit the Larmer Grounds
during the last two decades of the C19. One of only two such
buildings to have survived intact. (N. Pevsner, The Buildings of
