Detached cottage. Probably C15, altered C17 and C19. Square-
paneLLed timber framing, brick and rubble stone to rebuilt solar
end, thatched roof with half-hip to left and hip to right, axial
brick stack. Hall house with 1½ bay former open hall, divided from
2-storey 1-bay unheated service end by through passage, solar range
to west rebuilt in 2 storeys, probably C17. Two-storey, 3-window
front. Planked door and 2-light casement to left with two 2-light
casements and blocked door to right. First floor has eyebrow
dormer with 2-light casement to left and two 2-light casements to
right part. Left return has two 2-light casements and exposed full
cruck. Rear has C20 casements and C20 conservatory, solar range
set-back from hall.
Interior retains most features of the hall house, together with C17
insertions, although the rebuilding of the solar has removed
evidence for the late Medieval phase at this end of the house.
Through passage has C17 plank and muntin partition inserted on hall
side of former screen; beam with wattle holes for screen retained,
service end with heavy chamfered beam and exposed joists. Open
fireplaces in inserted stack of half-bay of hall with chamfered
lintels on stone jambs, inserted ceiling with chamfered beams,
winding stairs to rear of hall. First floor over hall has exposed
full cruck with arch-braced cambered collar; chamfered soffit and
ogee apex to arch-brace, chamfered purlins with curved windbracing,
all of heavy scantling. One of several good examples of cruck-
built hall houses in the Nadder Valley, see also Little Orchard
