Anglican parish church. Late C13, C14 and C15, 1878 restoration.
Dressed limestone, tiled roof. Aisleless cruciform plan, south
tower to west of south transept over entrance. Three-stage tower;
hollow-chamfered pointed arched doorway with diagonal buttress to
left and angle buttress to right, offset string courses, bellstage
has 2-light segmental-headed Perpendicular louvred window with
hoodmould to south side, west side has lancet to second stage and
cusped square-headed window to bellstage, string course with
gargoyles to battlemented parapet. South side of nave has 2-light
C19 Perpendicular-style window to left of tower. South transept
has three trefoil-headed stepped lancets in pointed arch, diagonal
buttress to right, east side has C15 two-light cusped square-headed
window. Chancel has small pointed priests door with C19 door, 2-
light pointed Perpendicular window with hoodmould either side. East
end has 3-light pointed Perpendicular window with grotesque
terminals, coped verge with cross finial, and blocked segmental-
headed archway below, to vault, north side has two 2-light windows
as south side, recessed pointed chamfered doorway to right. North
transept has C19 lancet to east, C19 two-light window with Y-
tracery to north, lean-to vestry attached to west. North side of
nave has C14 two-light window with reticulated tracery to left and
2-light Perpendicular window to right, west end has 3-light
Perpendicular window with hoodmould, coped verge with saddlestone,
large clasping buttress to left and diagonal buttress to right.
Interior: Porch has hollow-chamfered inner doorway, square bowl
from C12 font with blind arcading leaning against wall to left,
stone bench to right and square recess for stoup to right of door.
Nave has 5-bay C19 arch-braced collar roof on stone corbels,
diagonally-laid stone floor. North transept, now vestry, has
double chamfered arch on C13 compound half-piers with keel moulding
and moulded capping, 3-bay restored collar roof, part of former
doorway on west side of transept, from nave. South transept has
C19 double-chamfered arch and 2-bay C19 roof. C19 moulded pointed
chancel arch on compound half-piers, chancel has barrel-vaulted
boarded roof, four high steps up to altar rail, over Penruddocke
vault. Fittings: C19 pews, octagonal stone font in nave, possibly
C14, Tudor pulpit with linenfold panelling. Monuments include a
scrolled pedimented stone tablet in chancel to Johannis (sic)
Martin died 1693, large white marble on north wall of chancel
records the deaths of members of Penruddocke family of Compton Park
House (q.v.), probably early C19.
