Wheatsheaf Cottage


Detached cottage. Early C17, altered c18 and C20. Rubble stone
with some timber-framing with brick nogging, thatched roof with
stone and brick stacks. Central range with flanking wings. Single
storey and attic, one window. Central range has planked door and
single-light casement, wing projecting to right has 2-light C20
casement and lozenge-shaped window to attic, collar and tie-beam
truss of roof exposed in gable, wing to left has blocked door and
2-light casement to first floor, blocked casement to attic.
Attached to right is C20 addition, not of special interest. Left
return has blocked 4-light wood mullioned window with eyebrow over.
Right return has external stone stack. Rear has planked door and
2-light casement to right, central range has glazed door with
single casement to left, first floor and attic has 2-light
casements, exposed timber-framing to centre range, weatherboarding
to gable of right wing.
Interior has deep chamfered beam with stepped stops and large open
fireplace with stone jambs and cambered lintel in east wing, former
parlour, first floor has plank and muntin partition, planked doors
and chamfered beam. Although central range rebuilt C18, probably
represents remains of small late Medieval hall house. Known as the
Wyndham Arms during C19 and later The Wheatsheaf Inn.
