Grotto. Late C18. Rustic tufa limestone. Roughly circular free-
standing structure with several entrances and niches, small tunnel-
like inner chambers. Large ivy now established on top. One of a
group of fantasy structures on either side of Fonthill Lake,
together with the Tunnel (q.v.) 100 metres to north-west and the
grottoes (q.v.) on opposite side of the lake, all probably built
for William Beckford.
