Milepost. 1840s. Cast iron classical-style pedimented pillar with
raised lettering to front: WARMINSTER / 9 / MILES / SHAFTESBURY /
6 / MILES. One of a series of cast iron mileposts on turnpikes
radiating from Warminster, made by Carson and Miller, ironfounders
in Warminster. Warminster to Shaftesbury road was turnpiked as far
as East Knoyle under a 1726 Act.
