6/126 Clock Tower Gateway
GV II
Gateway to Stourhead (q.v.). Late C18. Dressed limestone. Pair
of 2-storey round-fronted towers flanking pointed archway with
battlemented parapet. Each tower has two recessed chamfered
pointed leaded windows with hoodmoulds to ground floor of road
front, first floor oculi, battlemented parapets. Rear facing
house; pointed ribbed doorway with keystone and imposts to each
tower, west tower has gilded clockface to first floor, east tower
has oculus, sides facing archway have loopholes, double cast-iron
gates. Probably a 1799-1800 rebuild of a similar gatehouse that
stood on the south side of the Stable Yard (q.v.).
