GV II
Grotto. 1744 by Henry Flitcroft. Rustic limestone segmental
arched recess, formerly part of a larger design featuring a statue
of a River God by Thomas Manning, bought in 1743, set in the recess
above a cascade. Flitcroft's design pre-dated the raising of the
water level to form the lake; the cascade was submerged and the
statue presumably removed c1754. This, together with the Temple of
Flora (q.v.) was Henry Hoare's first contribution to the gardens.
